The Beauty of the Bump
For months, America was wondering if Kylie Jenner was pregnant. Of course, Kylie had the perfect ploy to keep people guessing her pregnancy, from wearing baggy clothes to being absent from family events. Finally, on February 4, Kylie released a video of her pregnancy journey and the media was taken by Stormi (sorry I had to). The film featured heartwarming videos from friends and members of the Kardashian family, as well as Kylie showing off her pregnant stomach in tight dresses and revealing clothing. While celebrities used to cover up their pregnancies behind baggy clothes, a popular trend in Hollywood is to embrace it through skin tight outfits.
At first many celebrities faced critiques for embracing their pregnant bodies. Many deemed it “inappropriate” or “disgusting.” Yet what is disturbing about a woman showing off her pregnancy? It is the miracle of life, and a woman should be able to embrace such an important journey without being judged. Acknowledging this, celebrities like Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian led the way in showing the beauty of a baby bump. From wearing tight dresses to sky high heels, these women have shown that you do not have to sacrifice fashion to hide your pregnant body. Just because a woman is pregnant, it does not mean that she has to wear a frumpy dress to hide her larger figure. Maternity style is quickly evolving to be more accessible and fashionable for all mothers.
From designers making dresses specifically for pregnant celebrities, to women being praised for their maternity style, maternity clothing has become its own realm of fashion. There are fashion shows specifically for maternity clothes, and they are not featuring baggy dresses, but tight tops and dresses. Pregnant women no longer have to feel ashamed of dressing for their bodies, they can dress in a way that makes them feel confident, whether it is showing or concealing their baby bump.
As I researched more about Kylie’s pregnancy style, I stumbled upon an article that disturbed me: “Kardashians Maternity Style: Which Sister Dressed Their Bump Best While Pregnant?” With maternity fashion becoming more, well, fashionable, we have to remember that pregnancy is not a “who wore it better” scenario. It is a beautiful journey that every woman experiences differently, both physically and mentally. I’ll admit, Kylie’s video was pretty emotional, even for a non-Kardashian fan like me. She has shown us all that every woman’s pregnancy journey is different, and that’s the way it should be.
