5 Tips I’ve Learned from Following Fashion Influencers so You Don’t Have to
If you’re anything like me, your Instagram, Tik Tok and Twitter feeds are a frenzied conglomeration of online boutique ads and sponsored micro-influencer content. While social media can be a great place to gather fashion inspiration, sifting through all the content to find useful and easily applicable advice is often extremely overwhelming. So, I did it for you! Here are five tips I’ve learned from following fashion influencers so that you don’t have to.
1.If it doesn’t have sleeves, add them - Susie Lola
Maybe you’ve encountered this dilemma before – you’re dead-set on wearing your favorite graphic tee or tank, but it’s just too cold out. With the rise of knit and crochet pieces comes the simple solution we’ve all been hoping for: detached sleeves! This simple layering item is perfect to slip on over your corset top on a night out, and it adds something unique to the top you shamelessly sport several times a week. Creators like Gina Corrieri and Yanislaisi are just two of the many small-business designers feeding this new obsession.
2. There’s no such thing as clashing colors - Mimi Moocher
I’ll admit that this one took me a while to get on board with, but this style tip opened up a world of bold and fun outfit possibilities for me. Color theory has no bearing on the realm of fashion, where a “good” outfit is better determined by its desired fit, and the way it makes you feel when you slip it on and head out for the day. I thought I’d never be caught wearing combinations of black and brown or bright pink and red, yet incorporating these “clashing” color combinations doubled the yield of my only-what-can-fit-on-a-single-clothing-rod wardrobe and pushed me to dress more creatively.
3. Pajamas aren’t only for sleeping - Laini Ozark
What if I said you could roll out of bed without changing and still look cute and stylish for the rest of the day? I promise, it's possible. Pajama sets are generally overlooked as a viable option for non-sleeping related activities, but homebodies and social butterflies alike are beginning to appreciate all they have to offer. Pajama sets come in cute patterns like checkers or stripes and offer all the benefits of an easy, cohesive outfit without having to sacrifice your comfort or your wallet. If you throw a light jacket or trench coat over your jammies and pair them with some cool sneakers, nobody will even notice you caught ZZZs in your outfit the night before.
4. Neutrals don’t have to be boring - Amaka Hamelijnck
To all of our detriment, beige gets mistaken for bland far too often. An all-neutral outfit is a great opportunity to experiment with funky textures and unique silhouettes while still looking classy and refined. Neutrals can even make a bolder statement than bright colors with the right pieces, like crisp, khaki trousers or a chunky nude boot. Chances are you already have some neutrals in your closet just waiting to be thrown together.
5. Knitwear is for every season - Lindsay Vrckovnik
Who says that knitwear is only for winter and fall? In the past year, the holes have grown bigger and the thread thinner in the world of knitwear. If you have yet to layer up in the warmer months, you’re missing out on a lot of fun. Mohair is on the come-up, and is light enough to pair with jean shorts and a tank top without getting bogged down with summer heat. Maybe even pair a knit tank top with knit shorts! The possibilities are endless.
