A Very Royal Run-Down
Last Saturday, Northwestern alum Meghan Markle married Prince Harry.
Although Markle now has the official title of “duchess,” that’s like, basically the same thing as being a princess right? Either way, I, for one, am still daydreaming about all the glamorous fashion items showcased in what was literally a fairy tale come to life.
Let's break it down.
Markle wore an understated and timeless boat neck dress designed by Clare Waight, the first female artistic director of Givenchy. As an outspoken feminist, it makes sense that Markle chose to have an accomplished, boundary-breaking female designer create her wedding gown. While sister-in-law Kate Middleton chose to have a long train with a short veil, Markle went the opposite route with a 16 foot veil that was stitched with 53 flowers, each representing a country in the Commonwealth. The veil was a true statement piece, and its silk fabric allowed it to glide down the aisle effortlessly. For her something borrowed, Markle chose Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara from Queen Elizabeth’s collection, and complemented it with a loose bun. On top of it all, she wore white silk Givenchy shoes. Classic.
For the evening reception, Meghan wore a silk crepe Stella McCartney gown with a high neck and bare shoulders, paired with Aquazurra shoes complete with unique blue soles. Both of Markle’s looks were more simple than one might imagine for a royal wedding, but they allowed her to be the star of the show and emphasized her natural beauty.
Prince Harry looked dashing in his Blues and Royals frockcoat uniform. Although men are usually made to shave when wearing full military dress, Harry likely got an exemption from the Queen to sport his signature beard on his big day.
He changed for the evening reception as well, into a fitted black tuxedo.
If you were lucky enough to score an invite, you were told to wear a “uniform, morning coat or lounge suit/day dress with hat." There were plenty of floral and pastel summer dresses and hats, as well as dapper suits with morning coats for the men.
My favorite look from a couple was Amal Clooney in a bright yellow Stella McCartney midi dress and matching hat and George Clooney, matching her, in a grey suit and striped yellow tie.
Priyanka Chopra had her own princess moment at the evening reception in a glitzy Dior ballgown.
The women weren’t the only ones serving looks on Saturday— David Beckham looked absolutely perfect in a grey three-piece morning suit by Dior Hommes.
