A Victorious Fashion Deep Dive: Character by Character

With Victorious’s return to Netflix, everyone has been diving into Beck and Jade’s romance and the ridiculousness of every episode’s plot, and hilarious memes making fun of the show’s “tweet” transitions have surfaced. With the show’s return to prominence, we’ve all been experiencing a certain kind of nostalgia for what it was. One thing that stands apart from the rest at Stitch, however, is the fashion exhibited by the characters in Victorious. Back in the day, it was easy to envy the characters on our favorite TV shows for their styles. Looking back, it is nearly comical to see some of the things these actors were forced to wear. But how have the styles exhibited in these shows influenced the way we dress today? Were some of these looks, while slightly over the top, influential?

Cat Valentine — Back Then:

Before she was topping the Billboard Charts, Ariana Grande played the beloved Cat Valentine, known for her high pitched voice and sweet disposition. Cat’s character was often dressed in short and soft dresses — typically in colors such as light blue and pink or floral patterns. Additionally, Cat was known for her fiery red hair — a full dye job that was slightly ahead of its time in terms of trendiness. Today, we still see these short but sweet dresses (even styled by Grande herself) and fully colored locks.

While Cat’s looks are very early 2000s, her style at its core is still very utilized in 2019. This model mimics a modern-day Cat Valentine with her balayage hair and floral fit.

Jade West — Back Then:

Jade was our emo queen. Her badass, “I don’t give a f*ck” attitude gave inspiration to all of the young girls that watched this show. Today, her all-black outfits and highlights are still very much in.

Today:

If Jade were around today, it’s certain she would fit in perfectly with the e-girl community. Honestly, it could be argued that she pioneered the trend (perhaps without all the TikToks, which I’m sure Jade would probably add to her list of things she hates).

I could see Jade West seamlessly slipping into an outfit like this. Additionally, given Jade’s inability to fade into the crowd, she’d undoubtedly dive into the “Euphoria” esque make-up trend.

Tori Vega — Back Then:

Tori probably took the least amount of risks in her ‘fits on Victorious, but her boho chic looks aged well (for the most part). Her iconic stacked bracelet looks and big handbag definitely inspired those with a more lowkey style.

Today:

In Tori’s picture look, she seems to match together stereotypically masculine looks with hints of femininity, telling me that if she was a Hollywood Arts student today, she’d probably be seen in the hallways wearing something like this:

In these looks, the girls mix together bright colors and darker, masculine pieces, much like Tori Vega pairing a bright red dress with a flannel.

Beck Oliver — Back Then:

Ah Beck. It’s no surprise that Avan Jogia went on to model after his career on Victorious. Beck was something else. Beck had a bit of an edge to him but had a fairly classic style. Some of his outfits aged so well that you could get away with wearing them in 2019.

Today:

Like his girlfriend, Beck would probably fall into an e-boy style. However, similar to his disposition, his looks would be a lot more laidback — like this one, which incorporates the must-have flannel (are you even Beck if you don’t incorporate a flannel into every outfit?) into a very 2019 look.

Andre Harris — Back Then:

Andre was all about the matching looks (and purple in this one — go ‘Cats). He was constantly seen with hoodies or the occasional plaid shirt. His sneakers, however, seemed to constantly be the attention grabber in his style choices.

With Andre’s attention to detail, something tells me he would definitely be apart of the chunky/statement sneaker trend.

Robbie Schapiro — Back Then:

Robbie was a pretty standard nerd back in the days of Victorious. He dressed pretty plainly but remained up-to-date with the trends as much as any Hollywood Arts student could. He dressed in a lot of jeans and sneakers with either graphic tees (as pictured here) or plaid shirts.

Today:

Okay, so this might be a little too cool for Robbie but it does incorporate the skeleton of most of his looks. The plaid pants and white button down add to the nerdiness that is Robbie, but the Vans and sweatshirt add a 2019 spin (and an extra attempt to be cool —which is also very Robbie).

Sinjin Van Cleef — Back Then:

Okay, hate all you want but you are lying to yourself if this outfit does not perfectly match the one of that one edgy kid in your Friday discussion section. Sinjin was the indie kid at Hollywood Arts. People thought he was weird, but really, he was just misunderstood.

Sinjin was an indie boy, so he’d probably be seen in something like this if he were a teen today.

The characters on Victorious were obviously style icons as their so-called bad outfits are styles that are still emulated in 2019.
