An Ode to Miley
This past week Miley Cyrus has blessed us with so much. A new single and music video for Malibu that for all of her super fans (such as myself) has made for an amazing two weeks and a perfect way to kick off the ~somewhat~ hot weather.
Let me first start of by saying I love Miley Cyrus. It is truly an irrational love, but there are few things that she has done wrong in my eyes. I have been through the Hannah Montana phase, the finding herself rebellious teen phase, Bangerz, Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz (which btw I believe is an outstanding album, I have listened to the full thing multiple times, my fav songs are Space Bootz and Fweaky) and now her Malibu phase.
In all of the craziness that Miley has done, I have stood by her and often argued on her behalf. I never saw anything wrong with trying out some crazy looks, cutting off her hair and ultimately finding herself. Throughout all of her phases, no matter how different each one was, I always felt like the true Miley was there. Someone who was passionate about the product she put out and always tried to do her best. If you haven’t watched, I highly recommend watching her Backyard sessions, Happy Hippie sessions and her singing Summertime Sadness on BBC Radio Live Lounge to see her true skill and commitment to her craft.
Miley Cyrus has also not limited herself to being just a singer. During the 2016 Presidential election, Miley was an outspoken supporter for Bernie Sanders and then helped Hillary Clinton recruit young voters to register. Miley also founded the Happy Hippie foundation in 2014, which is a non-profit committed to helping and fighting the injustice that is felt by homeless LGBTQ youth communities and other at risk youth groups.
To show why I love her so much and will continue to love her, I have chosen a few of my favorite all-star looks throughout the years that I think show the true Miley, who is ever-changing and a badass.
Alright, we all know we CANNOT mention Miley Cyrus without starting with Hannah Montana. Even though, Miley has disconnected from the blonde-wigged pop star, I will forever be indebted to her for giving us the Hoedown Throwdown.
The year is now 2010 and Miley drops her album “Can’t Be Tamed”, which has house-moms shrieking across the country wondering where their beloved Hannah Montana went. But Miley being Miley brought her fans a time of upfront realness. She was ready for anything and trying to figure out what adulthood really was about.
Not to mention this is the year The Last Song came out and the love story of Miley and Liam began.
Fast forward two years and now Miley is confidently walking hand in hand with Liam Hemsworth to the Vanity Fair after-party.
At the time, it seemed that this was the Miley that was going to stick around for a while, but then came that wild VMA night that changed everything.
I love this year so much for Miley that I couldn’t just put one photo. In a wild VMA night Miley put on quite a show that many could not stop talking about. I was along for the whole ride and immediately starting putting my hair in power buns.
Miley also put out her album BANGERZ, which is still my go-to pregame album.
2015 was a pivotal year for Miley Cyrus and her fans. This year weeded out the weak and the bandwagoners for the forever faithful.
Hosting the VMAs for a second time, Miley wore significantly less clothing and confused viewers the entire time, ending the show with a performance of Do It, off the album Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz. Not gonna lie, it did take me a second to wrap my head around this Miley, but once I did I was hooked.
Now in 2017, we see Malibu Miley, one who is at peace, serene and (I think) about to put out some of her best music. While I am a bit sad to see her crazy Bangerz era come to an end, I know what comes out with her newest album will blow me away once again.
But let’s be real, everything she does blows me away.
