A haircut can make or break a celebrity’s image. Social media has recently been up in arms over a few stars’ questionable hair decisions, and with good reason.

Take Joe Keery, star of “Stranger Things,” for example. The actor was famous for his fabulously fluffy 80s-style hair.

Then, at a Chanel dinner, he debuted his new look: a choppy bowl cut that lays flat on his head.

The public reaction was not positive, to say the least:

Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, faced similar critiques from the internet when he traded in his perfect coif for a buzz cut.

Fans were quick to draw not-so-kind comparisons:

Perhaps most egregious of all, singer Adam Levine not only buzzed his classically charming hair, but replaced it with a culturally appropriative style: cornrows. More specifically, bleach blond cornrows with a rattail.

The style, which he refers to as a “corn hawk,” sparked both concern and outrage:

Clearly, bowl cuts, shaved heads, and poorly-executed cornrows are not ideal hairstyles for men. So how should men be styling their hair? Polling at Sargent and Allison dining halls revealed which male celebrities Northwestern students think have the best hair and the trends that they exemplify.

Short and Cropped:

This trendy style is short and wavy on top and cropped close on the sides. It was moderately popular with Northwestern students, who referenced actors Chris Hemsworth and Ryan Reynolds as celebrities who rock this cut.

Clean and Coiffed:

Whether slicked close to the head or teased to the heavens, this look signals professionalism and effort. And who doesn’t appreciate effort? Celebrities with this style include “Queer Eye” star Tan France and actor Jake Gyllenhaal, both of whom were popular among Northwestern students

Long and Voluminous:

By far the most popular with Northwestern students, this style’s defining feature is length. Whether tousled or controlled, a big and beautiful head of hair is guaranteed to make a statement. Students mentioned singer Harry Styles and rapper A$AP Rocky as celebrities with this look, along with actor Timothée Chalamet, who was the most frequently named celebrity overall. He received 14 votes, where Styles came in second place with six.

So what qualities do Northwestern students value in a hairstyle? The most attractive trends were length, volume and the appearance of effort. Don’t worry if your ‘do doesn’t fit the bill, though — Elon Musk, Dwayne Johnson and Justin Bieber (specifically from 2009) each inexplicably received one vote. And however your hair looks, at least you don’t have a “corn hawk.”
