Katy Perry's Style Transformation
From candy inspired outfits to goth chic looks, Katy Perry has certainly sported some unique outfits throughout the years. With her bold looks, it is clear why she is a fashion icon and why she was chosen to be on the cover of Vogue’s May 2017 issue. Today, Katy Perry is a political activist with an edgy yet sleek sense of style. Her days of blue hair and cupcake bras are long gone.
When Perry first came out with “I Kissed a Girl,” she immediately grabbed the world’s attention. The song was nothing like anything else on the radio - just as Perry’s fashion sense was like no one else’s on the red carpet. When she first became famous she had a quirky sense of style. She donned retro looks like polka dot dresses and bold outfits like this half-feminine half-menswear look.
When Perry released her next album, Teenage Dream, her style matched her upbeat pop music. Her wardrobe was full of fun colors and costume-like outfits. Every one of her outfits was full of sparkles and neon colors. These bright outfits matched her bright blue hair and her bubblegum pop songs. At this point, Perry had officially established herself as one of the most famous pop stars in Hollywood. Her catchy, upbeat songs were on every radio station.
In 2012, Perry’s concert movie Katy Perry: Part of Me premiered, and fans were able to see Perry’s life behind the scenes. While the movie was full of Perry’s colorful candy-inspired costumes, fans were able to see a more sensitive side to Perry. Although she still donned quirky, costume-like outfits, she wore a classy and sophisticated dress to the movie’s premiere.
During the era of her next album Prism, Perry’s outfits reflected her new alternative sound. Perry dyed her hair dark purple and began to wear more edgy, goth chic looks rather than her usual bold and colorful outfits. Perry’s new music and new look allowed her to be taken more seriously as an artist and as a fashion icon.
Perry has not released a new album since Prism, but she became an involved political activist for Hillary Clinton. She had become more than just a pop star, she became an important spokesperson for Clinton’s presidential campaign. Many of her looks reflected her support for Clinton, and she wore many of these as she performed at Clinton’s rallies. Even though she gained a more sophisticated image, she still had fun with many of her fashion looks.
Now, with her short hairdo and more mature looks, Katy Perry has completely transformed her sense of fashion. She has certainly come a long way from candy dresses and whipped cream bras. There is no one better to cover this month’s cover of Vogue, for Katy Perry is and always will be a fashion force to be reckoned with.
