Met Gala 2017 Highlights
When the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the theme for the 2017 Met Gala, the fashion world knew this year was going to be a special one. For the first time since 1983, the Met featured a living designer, Rei Kawakubo, and her brand, Comme des Garcons. While many may recognize the brand by its PLAY label (you know the cute little red hearts with eyes), Comme des Garcons has a much more dramatic, risk-taking, and avant-garde side as well. Her recent runway collection featured exaggerated shapes, stiff structures, and dramatic hats. Thus, one would expect gala attendees to go all out and take every fashion risk, and that is just what viewers got. Check out the highlights of the night below.
Singer Katy Perry, the co-chair of the event, wore an all red, tulle dress adorned with beads and glitter. To accessorize she wore a matching veil and a cape-like tulle train.
Meanwhile, fashion icon Rihanna stole the carpet with a structured Comme des Garcons dress made up of patterned petals that created an explosive texture. She paired the ensemble with sexy red stilettos that laced up to her thighs and a sleek high bun.
Model and reality TV star Kendall Jenner interpreted the theme in a sexier manner in a La Pela Haute Couture gown. Approximately ninety percent sheer and one hundred percent sultry, the dress features an asymmetrical gap in the chest and leggy side slit. The beaded dress, while daring, is still sophisticated and simplistic—a signature Kendall look.
Hadid sisters Gigi and Bella appeared in strikingly opposite attire. Gigi opted for an all nude Tommy Hilfiger piece that appears to be a hybrid between a trench coat and gown. Structured on top with a flowing tulle bottom, the piece perfectly meshes tulle, satin, and other fabrics. On the other hand, Bella wore a skin tight, off-the-shoulder Alexander Wang jumpsuit. With a woven texture and semi-sheer black fabric, the outfit is sleek and sensual.
While many attendees flaunted daring outfits and pulled no stops, others took a more conservative approach with the theme. Fellow co-chair and former model, Giselle Bundchen graced the carpet in a stunning Stella McCartney dress. Sleek and shimmering, the dress featured an open back and conservative train.
Another retired Victoria’s Secret Angel, Naomi Campbell, wore a classy Burberry gown. All black with capped sleeves and silver detailing, the dress featured a side slit that proved the model hasn’t aged a bit since her modelling days.
As for the males, The Weeknd played it safe with a tailored tux and simple black bow-tie. His iconic hair was even tamed down. More exciting, however, is that he debuted his relationship with singer Selena Gomez.
Jaden Smith wore an all-black ensemble with jogger-esque pants, platform boots, and a long peacoat. He accessorized the Louis Vuitton outfit with two gold chains, a gold grill, and a bouquet of his own dreads.
Lastly, Wiz Khalifa arrived in a Thom Browne white tail coat trimmed thickly in black. He paired the look with cropped black tuxedo pants and half laced white boots. Let’s not forget the shades and joint of course.
Even though some guests erred on the side of caution, the Met Gala was still filled with fashion risks. And for those who kept it simple, the looks appeared sleek and sophisticated - nothing Rei Kawakubo wouldn’t agree with.
