So Maybe We Don’t Have to Wear Jeans Again?

While the 20- and 30-year trend cycle used to be fairly reliable in predicting what would soon be in style again, the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically shifted the speed and fluctuation of the trend cycle, particularly by increasing the number of microtrends. One thing we can count on though is that blending comfort and fashion is here to stay.

While this has long taken the form of luxury sweatpants like Aviator Nation or Free City, the more overt blending of sleep wear and high fashion in our hyper-at-home state has made this more prevalent among brands and many different price points.

A couple of weeks ago I attended the annual Willard Formal, and I was very tied up about what to wear. I mean, it’s February in Chicago, so my dress options were pretty limited. I wanted something that would keep me warm but also feel special. Who would have thought that the answer lied in… my pajama drawer?

I ended up wearing a pajama set with feathers on the trim of the sleeves and the bottom of the pants. Since both parts of the set are loose for comfort while sleeping, I wore a textured black bandeau top and left the pajama top unbuttoned. Matched with a pair of heels the outfit was more stylish than the little black dress I was planning to wear, but it was also more comfortable and even kept me warm in the snow.

One thing I really love about this trend is the versatility of each look. While the ability to make so many combinations is a benefit that comes with almost any matching set, matching pajamas lend themselves especially well to dress up for any occasion. The smallest details can really elevate this look or make it perfect for a casual day of lounging around the house.

If you’re looking to bring pajamas into your wardrobe, here are a few ideas!

  1. The perfect nightgown or slip dress can easily be styled for every season. In the winter, layer the dress over a turtleneck in a contrasting color, and secure it with a belt and matching accessories for the perfect outfit for classes, work or dinner with friends.

  2. Matching sets are a great casual ‘fit as is, especially unbuttoned with a form-fitting top underneath. If both pieces of the set feel like too much, wearing the pajama pants with a plain top and a fun jacket or blazer can be a great way to integrate more patterns without being too bold.

The most important thing about the pajama trend is having fun and being comfortable in each look. There is really no wrong answer!
