The Denim Bible
Denim is a staple in everyone’s wardrobe. Whether you have remained faithful to the skinny jean or ventured into new trends of straight leg and ‘mom’ style jeans, nothing beats a good white T-shirt and blue denim combination. Although we must remain grateful for the wide array of styles available to us, it is no secret that jean shopping can be a very overwhelming experience. I am here to lay down the golden rules of what to look for when shopping for your dream pair of jeans.
1. Put yourself before the trend
It is hard to ignore the fact that light wash straight-leg jeans have basically taken over the denim world. However, if that’s not your style, then just ignore it! Don’t feel pressured into wearing a style of denim that you simply do not feel comfortable in just because your friends are. The more confident you are in a pair of jeans, the better they will feel.
2. Experiment with ‘stretch’
With ‘90s style making a hard and fast return to the fashion world, so has the rigid denim of classic Levi’s 501s. Not only are brands such as AGOLDE and Re/Done attempting to mimic this tough denim feel in their collections, but people are even reverting to thrifting actual vintage Levi’s (a way more sustainable and frugal option)! Even though rigid denim may technically be more authentic, if you don’t like the way it feels or looks on you, then ditch it. Brands such as Topshop, Mother, and Zara are still managing to create incredibly trendy jeans without sacrificing any of the comfort or stretch.
3. Invest when it feels right
It’s no secret that the high street stores absolutely kill it when it comes to creating affordable yet stylish denim. However, there is something to be said for investing in a slightly higher end brand. Now, I am not telling you to drop $200 every time you see a cute pair of jeans, but spending a little bit more on one or two pairs of classic denim may end up being worth it in the long run. I can personally attest to the fact that a one-time purchase of J-Brand black skinny jeans was way more financially responsible than new pairs of fading black Topshop jeans every few months.
4. Look after your denim
Whether they are high street or high-end, you must take proper care of your denim garments. According to the CEO of Levi’s, we should never actually wash our jeans – nor should we freeze them as an alternative. Although I don’t agree with completely cutting denim out of your laundry rotation (personally, I think this seems unhygienic), you must be careful not to overwash your denim. Unless you are rolling around in mud, you should really only wash your jeans every five to six wears in cold water and NEVER tumble dry them. Overwashing your denim can cause the color to fade and the shape to change – both nightmares for frequent jean wearers!
I hope these tips help guide you in not only creating your dream denim collection, but also ensuring that each pair remains in perfect condition.
