Retro hair accessories are in, and I am so happy about it.

Not only is it now socially acceptable to start wearing tiny butterfly clips and tortoise shell barrettes to class, but it is New York Fashion Week approved. Yes, fashion bloggers and Instagram influencers have officially labeled your favorite childhood hair accessories as fashionable. New York Fashion Week was littered with all different forms of slides, hair clips and barrettes. Although a lot of them were wearing statement bedazzled Gucci hair slides, you can achieve the same look for a lot less.

The high street is cashing in on this retro trend, offering packs of slides and clips for under ten dollars. Although Madewell and Urban Outfitters may be currently monopolizing the hair clip industry, this trend truly started with niche accessory brands gaining Instagram popularity. Stores such as the Parisian brand Valet Studio, which specializes in handmade resin jewelry and hair accessories, gained a unique following of fashion forward women who are interested in investing in beautiful, unique hair pieces.

Whether you are someone who is simply testing out the trend or you are ready to start a full blown barrette collection, hair clips are the perfect way to elevate even the simplest of outfits. A white shirt and blue jean combination can be instantly transformed into a chic, cool girl look through the simple addition of a tortoise shell clip. Bored of your going out outfits but don’t want to spend money on new clothes?  Spice up your uniform of a black tank top and skinny jeans by adding a sparkly hair slide or colorful barrette!
