Trend Highlight: Fashion Week
As over-the-top as some runway outfits may be, New York, London, Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks set the trends for the upcoming year. Like most people interested in fashion, I meticulously pour over runway photos and religiously watch Instagram stories and videos from each designer’s show. However, when I look at these pictures and videos I can’t help but wonder how any college student could pull off that kind of wearable art on campus — let alone afford these designer looks. Fortunately for those of us who aren’t runway models, it’s possible to take trends from fashion weeks and make them our own. Here’s a college student’s guide to inexpensively wearing Fall 2018 Fashion Week trends.
Polka Dots
Polka dots, which tend to be trendy every five years, have once again made a comeback for Fall 2018. This time, designers have decided to lean more toward colorful dots instead of the usual black and white. For only $69.90 at Zara, you can affordably replicate this trend with brown polka dot pants. Pair these statement pants with a black sweater and boots to successfully rock this popular look.
Neon
At the Prada Fall 2018 show in Milan, Miuccia Prada brought blinding neon back. Although it can be difficult to incorporate neon into your wardrobe without looking like your middle school self after a Justice shopping spree, H&M sells a super low cost sweatshirt for only $12.99 to layer over your favorite LBD. Pair this outfit with some statement necklaces and thigh-highs and you’ll be sure to be on-trend, stylish and best of all, looking much older than 13 years old.
Plaid
Seen everywhere from Versace to to Michael Kors, bright plaid dominated the runways this year. To ace this trend, channel your inner Cher Horowitz and wear a bright yellow checkered skirt, like this $48 one from Topshop, with a white turtleneck. To keep yourself from looking like you’re wearing a school uniform, make sure to pair this outfit with heeled leather boots. And since the brutal Chicago weather isn’t looking like it’s going to ease up anytime soon, don’t forget tights!
Leopard
Featured in Tom Ford and Max Mara’s shows, leopard print once again made a return to fashion week. Since it’s not Halloween and none of us can walk across campus in head-to-toe leopard like Gigi, Zara’s got us covered with the next best thing: an inexpensive $49.90 leopard print blouse. Pair this flowing statement blouse with tights or leather pants to ensure you successfully rock a fashion week trend off the runway.
