Grammy Awards Fashion Roundup

Although the Grammys on Sunday may have been a disappointment awards-wise (Kesha and Lorde deserve better), they were certainly not a disappointment fashion-wise. The Grammys have a history of unforgettable fashion moments, from Jennifer Lopez’s iconic Versace dress in 2000 to Nicki Minaj’s Versace cloak in 2012. This year was no different, as music industry professionals honored the Time’s Up movement by wearing white roses. According to Billboard, Roc Nation’s Meg Harkin and Interscope Records’ Karen Rait organized this wearing of the white roses to show solidarity against workplace sexual abuse and harassment, similar to the black dresses at the Golden Globes. The white roses also honor the suffragette movement and women who have dedicated their lives to fighting gender inequality. Harkin and Rait hoped that artists in unity on music’s biggest night of the year would bring more attention and momentum to the Time’s Up movement. These artists who participated flawlessly incorporated their statements into their iconic chosen outfits.

Lady Gaga

In my personal favorite dress of the night, Lady Gaga’s all black lace Armani Privé bodysuit and black skirt is a change from her past awards show outfits (Never forget the meat dress).  As her music has matured, so has her style. Lady Gaga paired her beautiful dress with both a white rose and a Time’s Up pin.

Lorde

Although Lorde didn’t walk the red carpet, she arrived to the awards show in a red Valentino tulle dress and a matching red flask. As the only Album of the Year nominee who was not offered a solo performance, unlike the other male nominees, she was rightfully upset with event organizers. Although she didn’t win Album of the Year, in my eyes she won for best statement, as instead of donning a white rose she stitched a Jenny Holzer poem referencing the Time’s Up movement to the back of her dress.

Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae brought color to the Grammys in a floral Dolce & Gabbana suit. Although she’s known for never wearing color, Janelle Monae sparkled in this new look paired with her rose while giving a powerful introduction speech before Kesha’s performance.

Cardi B

Cardi B’s first Grammys red carpet was as successful as her career this past year. The rapper, who brought her sister as her Grammys date, donned a unique Ashi gown paired with diamond jewelry and a white rose.

SZA

After an incredible breakout year, the most nominated woman this year looked amazing on the red carpet. Even though she was seriously snubbed, at least her Versace gown and white rose made her look like a princess.

Kesha

In the most iconic performance of the night, Kesha wore a custom white floral suit embroidered with white roses during a passionate performance of her song “Praying.” This song, written after years of enduring sexual abuse and legal battles with producer Dr. Luke, is an embodiment of what the Time’s Up movement is about. Bringing up other powerful women who were also dressed in white further symbolized the unity of women in the entertainment industry right now. Although she didn’t win any of the awards that she was nominated for, she won for the most inspiring and moving performance.
