Alexander Wang's NYFW Kegger

Fashion designer Alexander Wang is known for his innovative, edgy, and urban looks. When he launched his Fall 2007 women’s ready-to-wear collection, the fashion world was left in awe at the newcomer’s designs. Now, ten years later, Wang is still ruling the runway with his all-black Fall 2017 collection. More importantly however, the designer worked to crack the picture of the “prim and proper” fashion industry by creating a mysterious “No After Party” invitation.

The “No After Party” slogan was seen not only present on the invitations, but also the entrance wristbands as well as Wang’s simple black t-shirt. Why? Because he brought the party to the runway. Guests were greeted with kegs of Peroni and music that reverberated to your bones. In addition, guests were not permitted to take a seat as Wang opted for a more informal standing-only scene. The runway was propped up above standing level at the RKO Hamilton theatre.

Despite the kegger theme, Wang’s all-black collection was still the center of attention. All-black ensembles are a huge risk when designing a runway collection. While many of us, myself included, may gravitate towards black in everyday wear, the color doesn’t do so well on the runway. The harsh lighting and the distance between viewer and model typically cause details in black fabric to be lost. But to no surprise, Wing managed to pull off an all-black collection.

The key to his success was incorporating mesh and showing slivers of skin. By doing so, Wang was able to let the black pieces stand-out instead of hiding them amongst layer after layer and creating a one-dimensional palette. Wang also mixed up fabric choices between satin, leather, beads, and sequins. The variety of fabrics ensured  that each look is fresh despite the all-black color scheme.

High-waist leather pants, provocative satin slips, and oversized blazers and suit jackets were just some of the silhouettes to hit the runway. Each look featured some sort of glitz, whether it was metallic accents or subtle glitter. Wang also featured models with fresh and edgy boyish haircuts. Some models even sported a trendier, more modern version of a bowl cut. Who would have thought that infamous cut would ever make its runway debut?

Alexander Wang has proven he’s in the fashion game for the long run. While he leaves us blown away with his current collection, the fashion world eagerly awaits for what he will bring to his next show
