STREETWEAR SPRING/SUMMER SAMPLER
The influence of streetwear on the fashion industry is huge. Brands inspired by a blend of urban life, high fashion, and youth and skateboarding culture create trends that spread through the industry. Being well into the spring-summer season, we can look at several streetwear heavyweights to understand their go-to Spring/Summer influences and themes.
SUPREME
Supreme, a brand grown out of New York skateboarding culture, is one of the most recognizable and followed brands in streetwear. Supreme’s frequent collaborations fuse the worlds of hip hop, modern art, Americana, and Japanese clothing into one. The clothing that has already been released for the Spring/Summer 2016 season is similar to previous seasons with collaborations from Andy Warhol, Muhammad Ali, Black Sabbath, Stone Island, Sasquatchfabrix, and more. A central trope of the season is using vibrant and geometric designs by Alessandro Mendini, an Italian artist and architect.
PALACE
Palace’s roots are deep in British skateboarding culture. Their signature “Triferg” design, a Penrose triangle inscribed with the brand’s name, is common in the Spring/Summer 2016 season. The collection relies on pastel colors, playing into the palewave trends popularized over the last few years. The season also incorporates loud striped patterns, reminiscent of this year’s 90’s-inspired A$AP Rocky/GUESS collaboration (shown below).
GOSHA RUBCHINSKIY
Gosha Rubchinskiy is making huge waves in fashion, despite being a fledgling brand. Truly an overnight sensation, the company’s sales have increased by over 350% in the last year. The company’s designs draw from Soviet sportswear and youth culture, consistently featuring Russian text as well as the red, white, and blue of the country’s flag. Gosha’s Spring/Summer collection reflects these themes while branching into other Soviet-inspired pieces, like the wool multicolor sweater shown below.
