Movers and Shakers: Patricia, Director of Recruitment for STITCH

Meet Patricia, Northwestern sophomore and director of recruitment for STITCH.

What’s your personal style?

I’m honestly the laziest when it comes to fashion—give me a t-shirt and jeans and I’m good to go. Since I’m from Silicon Valley, it’s not unusual to see people going to work in hoodies and stuff, and I think I’ve picked up a bit of that casualness in my style. I’m trying to venture out of my comfort zone, though, but I usually stick to what I know looks good: all-black outfits, stripes, denim, crop tops...ask me this in a few months, however, and I might have a completely different answer!

Why’d you join STITCH?

In high school, I feel like I was always an observer of fashion and not an active participant. I watched runway shows and read Teen Vogue, but wore sweatpants everyday. STITCH gave me an opportunity to learn more about fashion and be within the fashion world (in a small way?), it was a creative outlet for me as well! I’m in STEM, so I don’t really get many opportunities to write with a non-academic tone.

How else do you contribute to the NU community?

I’m a Bienen person!! So, I play in the Bienen orchestras and groups. Last year, I even played in the pit for an opera, which was really cool. I also write for the Northwestern Business Review...and moderate Northwestern Memes for Networking Teens. (Exposed!!!)

What’s your biggest goal for STITCH this year?

I think a goal I have in my work for STITCH is to follow STITCH’s mission statement: “set fashion free.” Fashion is more than just clothes. It’s a form of art and I think many people disinterested in fashion could really be surprised by how fashion can represent all kinds of things, from historical eras to social/political movements. So, I’d like to “set fashion free” in a sense by helping STITCH share unconventional notions of what fashion is and what a fashion magazine can do.
